The business landscape never stands still. But just how do changes within the economy, politics, technology and more serve to shape the way companies start and grow?
In a new series of interviews we’ve consulted with some of the established businesses that have received support from TEDCO through the years. We’re curious to hear their thoughts on how the business landscape has changed.
First up, we spoke to Doctor Seaweed – a.k.a. Dr Craig Rose – the founder of Seaweed & Co.
Hi Craig, how would you say that the North East business environment has changed since you founded the business in 2015?
The North East is a great place to do business and has become more coherent in terms of business activities and interactions in the past nine years since I started. Whilst less funding is perhaps available, there appears to be a very buoyant and mature business mindset, and an improved realisation of what we have to offer as a region.
What do you know now about running a business that you wish you’d known when starting out?
That no-one knows as much as they think they know. Also, to go with your gut instincts more often.
What was the best piece of advice you received as you were starting your business?
To get on and do it. There will always be a reason not to.
Do you think there are any things that make starting up easier in 2024 than when you began trading? If so, what are they?
Depending on the sector, there are perhaps lower barriers to entry now in terms of technology available to help. But, overall, business is about looking forward and not back, as what may have happened or been easier in the past has been done and new challenges and opportunities are what should be focussed on.
Do you think there are any things that make it harder to start a business in 2024 than when you began trading? If so, what are they?
Right now I think there is far greater uncertainty than there was nine years ago. However, uncertainty in itself brings opportunity.
What role has business support played in your organisation’s journey?
From the beginning I had support in writing business plans to access finance for debt and grants. Beyond that, I had support from the team at TEDCO who gave good advice and challenged me in a positive way.
If you could go back in time and give advice to your younger self about to start a business, what would you say?
Believe in what you are doing more and go with what you feel is right. Don’t worry about failures along the way. Let them happen fast, learn and move on.
Where do you hope to take your business in the next five years?
Growth and then an exit.
