Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Goodwill Healthcare Services Limited (GHS Care) to find out how the business landscape has changed. Since 2018, GHS Care has provided quality, relationship-based care that promotes social values. Working closely with healthcare providers, the team at GHS Care help those in care attain new levels of independence, from employment to community engagement.
The business landscape never stands still. But just how do changes within the economy, politics, technology and more serve to shape the way companies start and grow?
In a new series of interviews we’ve consulted with some of the established businesses that have received support from TEDCO through the years.
We caught up with Paul Makhumula-Nkhoma, Managing Director of GHS Care, to find out more about what running a successful business looks like in 2024.
Hi Paul, thanks for taking the time to chat to us. Do you think there are any things that make it harder to start a business in 2024 than when you began trading? If so, what are they?
I think there’s definitely more competition these days, thanks to an influx of tools, talent and resources. Because of that, customer expectations have risen, so you have to deliver top-end service and experiences in order to stand out.
Of course, recent years have been pretty uncertain from an economic standpoint, which presents its own challenges when it comes to funding and cash flow. I’d also say compliance is a significant factor for modern businesses. GDPR and other stringent regulations are necessary, but can be overwhelming for new businesses.
What role has business support played in your organisation’s journey?
Business support has been vital in helping GHS grow and overcome challenges. It’s provided access to expertise from mentors and industry experts, for one thing. Mark Johnston (TEDCO Business Advisor) has been invaluable, as his guidance helped us navigate key decisions in areas like finance and operations.
Financial support through grants, loans, and government initiatives has also allowed us to invest in our vision more, whether through technology or staff. Support in the form of training programs, like the workshops organised by TEDCO, enabled us to develop our employees’ skills and ensure compliance with industry standards.
I think networking is an often overlooked but absolutely crucial benefit of business support. We’ve made valuable contacts through business support networks, including potential clients, partners, and suppliers.
If you could go back in time and give advice to your younger self about to start a business, what would you say?
I’d say focus on building a strong team, first and foremost. Success depends on the people around you, so invest in finding and retaining talented, dedicated employees, and create a positive work culture. This goes for wider relationships too. Building strong bonds with clients, staff and partners are invaluable, because trust and loyalty are more beneficial than any short-term gains.
I’d also tell myself to be ready to adapt, because flexibility is key. The market will change, customer needs will evolve, and unexpected situations will arise, so embrace change and don’t be afraid to fail.
And, of course, take care of yourself. Entrepreneurship can be stressful, but don’t neglect your own health and well-being. Even from a business standpoint, burnout can slow your progress, so maintain a balance between work and personal life.
Where do you hope to take your business in the next 5 years?
I want to broaden our range of services and meet the evolving needs of our clients, including new tech to enhance care delivery. I also want to expand into new regions, establishing a stronger brand presence.
This is going to take a good team, so I’m looking to invest in ongoing training and professional development for our staff. It’ll also require strategic partnerships with healthcare organisations, community groups, and educational institutions.
It’s impossible to think ahead without considering sustainability, so one of our key goals is to implement sustainable practices and innovative solutions that not only improve efficiency but also support our commitment to quality care and environmental responsibility.
Overall, we want to continue to refine our services to deliver the best for our clients, with personalised care plans, improved communication, and taking feedback on board.
