Turning a creative passion into a sustainable business is never easy, but for photographer David Moles, that real milestone was the day he made his first sale as a full‑time business.
David launched D.K.World‑Photography as an online, print‑focused photography business, specialising in distinctive images that customers simply can’t find on the high street. His work spans Asian photo art, landscapes, waterfalls and even Formula 1, with many pieces becoming genuine conversation‑starters in customers’ homes. He also offers commissioned work, creating bespoke images tailored to a customer’s space, subject or style.
A first sale that changed everything
One of David’s biggest moments came early on when he achieved his first ever sale as a full‑time business.
“It represented more than just income, it was the moment I realised that people valued my work enough to pay for it.”
That first sale gave David confidence, validated his direction and marked the point where photography moved from a personal passion into a genuine trading business. It set the foundation for everything that followed and helped him believe that building something sustainable was possible.
Meeting the challenge of finding customers
Like many new businesses, David’s biggest challenge has been finding and retaining customers. With a background in management and photography, he knew the creative side but building a commercial model that worked took guidance, testing and confidence.
David began selling through his online shop, as well as attending local markets, events and pop‑ups, using each opportunity to learn more about what customers really wanted.
That learning led to an important shift.
“I realised that the strongest demand is for my prints, both online and at craft fairs, rather than the photography courses and guided photography walks that I had been offering.”
As a result, David is now moving towards a print‑only business model, better aligned with customer demand and wider industry trends.
Strong supplier relationships supporting growth
As David’s business has evolved, he has been careful to build dependable relationships with suppliers he knows and trusts. Through experience, he has identified partners who combine competitive pricing with reliable delivery and responsive customer service.
Having suppliers who resolve issues quickly is essential for maintaining stock levels, meeting customer expectations and protecting his reputation. This consistency allows David to focus on creating and selling his work, confident that the practical side of the business is in safe hands.
How David utilised the Durham Business Growth Programme
Working with TEDCO Business Advisor Alan Dodsworth has played a key role in shaping David’s next steps.
“I would like to highlight just how much support I have received from my advisor, Alan Dodsworth. His approach, honesty, and respectful manner have made a real difference to me.
He has given me confidence at times when I doubted myself, and his direct guidance has helped me believe that I can make this business a success. I am genuinely grateful for the time, clarity, and encouragement he has given me throughout this first year.”
Following Alan’s guidance, David has already increased his prices and is restructuring his website to present a more professional, confident offer. Each step has helped him feel clearer about his direction and more confident in his decisions.
“Everything Alan has advised, I’ve taken on board and it’s already made a noticeable difference.”
Looking ahead
David’s current priorities are clear: increase online sales, build visibility and grow his customer base. He is strengthening his website, social media presence and setting up a subscriber mailing list to share new releases, craft fair dates and special offers.
He remains open to new markets and selling opportunities, but with a disciplined focus on cost‑effectiveness and long‑term sustainability.
Words of advice for other businesses
David’s message to others starting out is simple:
“Make full use of any support available through Business Durham. Speaking with my advisor has been one of the most valuable parts of my first year. Even when I wasn’t sure the advice applied to me, it turned out to be exactly what I needed.”
Pride in progress
Completing his first full year of trading is what makes David most proud, particularly while managing health challenges alongside running a business.
“The business has helped me stay focused, motivated and positive. Getting through the first year, still trading and still improving, shows how far I’ve come.”
David is clear that support through Durham Business Growth and working with TEDCO has played a major role in that progress, offering clarity, encouragement and confidence at exactly the right moments.
