For Rachael Lockey, starting her own business wasn’t just about making a living—it was about making a difference. What began as a way to support a rabbit rescue soon grew into North East Pet Shop, a fully stocked pet supply store serving the local community and beyond.
From Rescue Rabbits to Retail Success
Rachael had been running a rabbit rescue for years, but the cost of supplies was becoming a challenge. To keep things going, she started sourcing pet products directly, not just for herself but for other pet owners struggling to find essentials—especially during lockdown.
“We started a small website where people could request items, and they’d collect them from our house,” Rachael explains. “Then, when I was made redundant, my husband Michael and I decided to take the plunge and open a full pet shop.”
That leap of faith paid off. North East Pet Shop now operates both online and from its physical store in Hebburn, offering over 15,000 products – everything from hamster bedding to horse feed. They even stock food for goats and llamas, catering to the unique needs of local pet owners.
The Best Part of Being Her Own Boss? Family Time.
Running a business comes with challenges, but for Rachael, the biggest reward is the freedom to be there for her family.
“Being able to take the kids to school every day is huge. We don’t open until 9:30, so I never have to miss that time with them.”
And in a region where people are passionate about their pets, the demand for affordable, high-quality pet supplies keeps growing.
How TEDCO Helped North East Pet Shop
Michael credits TEDCO’s business support with helping them make valuable local connections.
“They helped us find other businesses to partner up with, which has been really useful.”
